Light Years – New and Selected Artworks

Nov 4th, 2010 Dec 4th, 2010

Cormac O’Leary

Paintings evolve over years of gathered images, motifs emerging
and receding, stories being retold and reimagined. The Friday still-life was
painted in the hub of a wintry city, ghostly creaking on the studio floorboards,
a street din of traffic and voices outside. More recent work was accompanied
by birdsong and leaves rustling in the breeze. Visitants wandered onto one canvas, from a dusky wood. They lingered in the memory like shades.
As an artist I return to places over time, picking up the threads of a visual story. Scenes change but are also restored, reafirmed. Places are always renewing themselves- a shelf of rock by a thundering sea, beaches in a winter light, fields overshadowed by mountains, forests in seasonal flux. I draw the image out, build it up in waves of colour, try to strike the right note; the afterglow of memory

Hi guys,
Mirenda Rosenberg is planning a weekend long festival of music and art to be held in the Mount Errigal hotel in Letterkenny Co. Donegal the last weekend of February.
The music line-up looks terrific so it should attract a wide range of people.
I will be running the art exhibition in one of the rooms in which there is a raised stage area that will be dedicated to the art and craft activities with parents and children, or anyone  else who’s interested.
The charity is autism so there will be a focus on art activities for children with special needs.
There is a nice space which will be perfect for the artwork to be hung, so what I’m proposing is that all artists keep their pieces to an average size… , A4 – A3 maybe?

If anyone feels that they would like to participate, just reply to this post and we’ll get a list of exhibitors and artwork started…

Thanking you

Morgan

The SCOOP Foundation’s Art Auction & Exhibition 2010. The Ormond Bar, Ormond Quay, Dublin. Launched on the 14th of September. Actual auction is on the Sunday the 19th of September.

On Tuesday the 14th of September 2010, we launched the 2nd annual Art Auction & Exhibition (with a wine reception) in the hope of raising €35,000 in order to build a brand new, three floored, concrete built school in Cambodia that will not only create a place to educate up to 250 local Cambodian children, it will also become the centre for a community in an impoverished area outside Phnom Pehn.

More importantly still, it will create a very tangible and ‘user friendly’ link between the Irish and the Cambodians as we try to encourage as many different people from as many different walks of life to volunteer abroad, in the hope that it will create new avenues for the children over there. We encourage teachers and skilled workers as well as creative people to head over and to teach the kids their respective skill. At times it may not lead to a job in the future, but it would be a source of great fun, and this too in our eyes is a success.

So in order to try and raise the funds needed for a school we are gathering art from all around Ireland and the exhibition and subsequent auction on Sunday the 19th of September. We are extremely proud of the collection  that will be presented, it really is a testiment to all the artists who are taking part. The exhibition will launch on the 14th of September with a reception in the beautiful Ormond Wine Bar. This spacious and elegant restaurant/wine bar was in fact previously the Bridge Gallery so we feel it is the perfect venue to hang all the art, and for people to be comfortable whilst enjoying it so.

Like last year, we are working with Mealy’s Fine Art Auctioneers. So far we have secured pieces from Graham Knuttel, the world renowned Anne McCaughey, Lucy Doyle, artist and film-maker Shane Sutton, Academy Award nominee Ross Stewart (for the Secret of Kells), graffiti artist Maser, a signed portrait of Brian O’Driscoll by Mark Baker, Con Campbell, Kelly Hood, Ken Browne, John Nolan, Michael McSwiney, Leonie McMeel, Daire Irwin, Susan Morley, Conor Harrington, Darko, Geraldine O’Sullivan, Carol Hodder, Maria Noonan-McDermott, Thomas Halloran, Morgan, photographer B+, new comers Jason Dunne, Paul ‘Poncho’ Byrne, Killian Dunne, and painting legend Bennie Reilly .

Recently added artists include Karen Wilson, Katarzyna Gajewska, Dorian Van Braam, Carolyn Walsh, Christopher Sweeney, Leo de Freyne, Niall O’Lochlainn, Brian Ballard, Mary Yorke, Attracta Manson and her daughter Sarah Eva Manson, Anthony Chapman, El Mac, Marty Cullen, Stuart Quate, Niamh Slack, Jenny Watkins, Aoife O’Dwyer, Christopher Curran, Joby Hickey, Niki Purcell, Alain Tang, Laurent Antunes, Denise Cassidy, photographer and film-maker Nicky Larkin as well as Brock Butler, Lucia Cullinane Garcia and the Best Emerging Artist in Northern Ireland for 2004; Kelly Gallagher.

More recently added have been: Paul Freeney, ADW, Aoife Joyce, Paula Pohli, Derek Culley, Conor Harrington, Rowena Dring, Ronan Hackett, Cora Murphy, Niki Purcell, Alan O’Connor, Philip Kennedy Fiona Cashell, Helen McNulty, Clodagh Heaney, Roisín O’Farrell, Ciara O’Halloran, Igor Kochajkiewicz, Veronica Vierin, Enda Flynn, Dan Moran, Ania Hardy, Frank O’Dea, Daniel Bourke, Gill Prendeville, Donna McGee, Andy Devane and Elida Maiques.

“On The Wall”
An Exhibition Encompassing Different Media

  • Submissions open to members and non-members

Solas are inviting members and non-members to submit work for an exciting new exhibition
at the Solas Gallery, Ballinamore in November.
“On The Wall” will be the first of its kind for Solas, showing alternative art forms in various
types of media. As the name implies, the emphasis will be on work, which can be wall hung.
Small sculpture (wood, metal, paper or stone), non-digital prints, glass, ceramics, wall
hangings, felting, weaving, found objects … The list is as endless as your imagination and
skill! (on this occasion we are not looking for paintings, drawings and photographs). The aim
of this exhibition is to stretch ourselves as artists and introduce the public to new and different
forms of art.

Some points to consider in your submission:
1. We have a limited number of plinths at the gallery (sculpture). Tall, stable floor
standing pieces may be considered All pieces submitted for hanging should be
presented in the usual convention for hanging at Solas (pair of hooks fixed to the back
of the work)or suitable for hanging from picture hook and rail. Work cannot be fixed
directly to the wall. There can be no exceptions to this.
2. Up to 3 pieces per artist can be submitted. A non-refundable fee of €5 per piece is
payable by non-members. Members are covered by their membership fee.
3. Artists should include a brief (up to 50 words) explanation of the work with each
submission.
4. Maximum size for wall pieces is 60cm x 60cm if submitting three works. One single
larger piece may be considered.
5. The gallery is on the first floor so all work has to be carried up a flight of stairs. Large
stone or cast pieces are not suitable.
6. Selection will consider size /weight, originality, quality of work and presentation.
Pre-selection will be done by photo submission. Please supply at least 2 good images of
each work you are submitting – these should be photographs (not disc or email). If your work
is chosen in this preliminary selection, you will then be asked to bring it to the gallery for a
final selection.
Completed application forms, fee (if applicable) and photos of work should be marked
“On the Wall” and posted or hand delivered to Solas Gallery, Main St, Ballinamore, Co
Leitrim to reach the Gallery no later than Saturday 9th October 2010. An entry form and
these details can also be downloaded from the website http://www.solasart.ie

“On The Wall” will run from 5th – 27th November 2010.
We look forward to receiving your submission.

If you have any further queries about this exhibition please contact Sandra Vernon 071 9625276 sandra@solasart.ie./

Belfast Delivery

The venue for artists delivering work for the RUA Annual Exhibition on Sunday 22 August has changed from the Northern Bank to River House. This will also be the location of the RUA office from Tuesday 17 August.

While the main entrance to River House is on 48 High St, on Sun 22 August we will be using the back entrance on Waring Street only (10am – 4pm). To gain access you will need to go through the building carpark, the entrance to which is directly across the road from the Premier Inn Hotel and on the left of the RUA’s former office (or old War Memorial Building).  We will have signage in place so you will know you are at the right location. There will be car parking available for the purpose of delivery only.

When you enter the building you will see a service lift to your left which you will need to take to the 12th Floor to deliver your work.  The door to the lift measures 203cm(h) x 90 cm(w). Internally the lift measures 210cm(H) x 138cm(w) x 216cm(d) and has a weight capacity of 1600kg.
If your work is larger than the lift dimensions please call the RUA mobile on 07725316583 to make alternative arrangements.
